Evolving Challenges and Changing Expectations
Roles for forestry extension in meeting needs of people and forests around the globe
Sub-themes:
This is an international symposium. It is hoped that presenters from countries around the globe will bring perspectives on the symposium theme to address any of the following points.
- human/social dimensions: meeting needs of forest-dependent communities in transition; working with people and communities to respond to increased demands on forest resources; equipping communities to adapt to changing forest condition and changing economic pressures; promoting sustainable behaviour;
- policy influence: facilitating progressive policy change; identifying policy gaps; fostering policy development to meet changing expectations and demands; enabling effective policy implementation; regulatory and legal challenges
- adapting to changing ecosystems: tools and practices to manage forests under stress; management approaches to forest ecosystems adapting to climate change; responding to invasive species and native forest pests; changing non-sustainable practices
- challenges of supplying forest fibre to a six-billion person planet: meeting the needs of a growing population while ensuring sustainability; developing new products and markets for timber and non-timber products; innovations in the bioeconomy
